Spain is on the verge of experiencing a solar PV boom similar to the development of wind generation over the last few years. As with the wind industry, this boom will be driven by an effective policy and related subsidies plus aggressive investment both by incumbent utilities and by specialist firms.

Spain is one of the largest solar PV markets in Europe, currently third behind Germany and the Netherlands. Installed capacity in Spain has shown a dramatic rise since 1990. The year 2005 saw total installed capacity increase by 18MW to reach 50MW by the end of December.

Special Regime Plan -The recently published Special Regime Plan (2005-2010) issued by the Government has increased the official target for solar PV projects to 400MW by the end of 2010. In order to achieve this goal the average rate of new capacity build would need to increase significantly in the region of 90MW per year for the next four years..
